At 7:06 p.m., officers responded to the area of Ida B. Wells regarding shots fired.

An officer nearby says she was directing traffic when the men began shooting at each other. She says one of the suspects, later identified as Warren, ran toward her and he was detained.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene, located Young, and took him into custody.

It was previously stated by MPD that in a nearby incident, a Memphis police officer fired his service weapon while working a traffic detail.

No one was struck by gunfire during the incident, but a nearby bystander fell during the incident and suffered a minor injury. Police say she was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Preliminary information suggests the suspects and victims knew each other and that this was a targeted attack.

According to an affidavit, Young admitted to shooting at Warren and chasing him, continuing to fire as he ran down South 4th Street. He also told police that he purchased the stolen pistol “off the street” for $100.

Young had active domestic violence bail conditions in Shelby County Criminal Court prohibiting him from possessing a firearm at the time of the shooting.

The Memphis Police Department released a statement regarding the incident.

“The men and women of the Memphis Police Department continue to work diligently to create a safe environment downtown for our residents and visitors alike.

The safety and well-being of our community remains our top priority. We are increasing visibility in the downtown area and will continue to employ additional security measures to provide a heightened sense of safety for everyone.”

This is an ongoing investigation.
