Shots fired at Southern California senior housing complex

CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are evacuating a senior apartment complex near Los Angeles after a resident fired shots through her door.

It happened at about 4 p.m. Friday at the multi-story Castaic Lake Senior Village in Castaic, about 25 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Sheriff's Lt. Leo Bauer says deputies went to the complex to check on the welfare of a woman who was reported as being "highly disturbed." He says shots rang out as the deputies were walking up to the building.

Nobody was hit. The deputies didn't return fire, but authorities have surrounded the building. Deputies could be seen escorting people in wheelchairs or with walkers out of the complex.

KABC-TV reports that at times the woman has come out onto a balcony to smoke a cigarette. But Bauer says deputies haven't yet made contact with her.
