Everyone's favorite ogre will be coming to Fort Walton Beach this weekend and next.

Stage Crafters Community Theatre will present "Shrek The Musical" at the Fort Walton Beach Civic Auditorium at 107 Miracle Strip Parkway SW.

"Shrek The Musical," which is based on the popular Dreamworks animated film, was created by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire, The musical played in New York's Broadway theater district for more than a year before going on a tour of the United States in 2010.

"It actually follows the movie pretty closely," said Craig Ewing, who shares directing duties for the musical with Nancy Kruzek. "It is all about Shrek trying to get the fairy tale creatures that have been banished to his home, which is the swamp, out of there. So he agrees to go rescue Princess Fiona in exchange for the evil Lord Farquaad giving him his swamp back. He basically goes to rescue Fiona and he falls in love with her."

A classic boy-meets-girl story, but with a few plot twists. Ewing said the production is 100% kid friendly.

"It's based off of the Dreamworks video," Ewing said. "All those things have a little bit of the adult humor that the kids don't get, but that's the funny part about it. We're definitely advertising it as family-oriented."

This is the fourth and final show of the year for Stage Crafters, which is now in its 50th season. The musical will feature 26 cast members.

Playing the title character Shrek will be Dave Stanley.

"It's been a long time since he's been on stage with us, so we're really happy to have him back," Ewing said.

Newcomer Hillary Marshall will play Princess Fiona, while Douglas Henderson and David DeWitt will round out the main cast as the sidekick Donkey and the evil Lord Farquaad, respectively.

In addition to the cast, there are 34 more volunteers involved in behind-the-scenes production. And while you won't see any of the backstage staff, their handiwork will take center stage.

"Every single character, whether it's a pig or a wicked witch or the Big Bad Wolf or Little Red Riding Hood, they all have some kind of special makeup to make them look like those fairy tale creatures," Ewing said.

Stanley will be in full prosthetic makeup to play Shrek, and Ewing said it can take as much as an hour and a half just to put on his makeup for a single performance.

And it's not just makeup and costumes.

"We have a full-size castle that comes on and off," Ewing said. "We have a Shrek's house, his outhouse, we have the Dragon's Bridge and we have a tower that Fiona is in."

"I am so excited for people to see it," Ewing said. They're going to be blown away."

Tickets for the show are $30, with discounts for students and seniors. They can be purchased at stagecraftersfwb.com.

"All seating is reserved now," Ewing said. "So we encourage people to buy their tickets ahead of time to avoid the lines at the front of the house. But they can still get tickets at the front if there are any left."
