Shreveport author enters world of Mafia romance

Author Emily A. Myers of Shreveport is thankful for readers who “acknowledge there is a place in the literary world for all kinds of storytelling.”

In her writing career, this means readers find, embrace and review Mafia romance and romantic thrillers.

Mafia romance? This is a new subgenre for me.

When a longtime Shreveport resident met Myers at a neighborhood gathering and learned about her writing, she was intrigued and messaged me. I am still regularly surprised by the number of North Louisiana authors who write an incredible range of books and the many readers who enjoy vastly different genres—and asked Myers about her novels.

Her new “Mine to Protect” Mafia romance joins her romantic thriller duet, “The Truth About Unspeakable Things” and its sequel, “Bound by the Unspeakable,” all three set in New Orleans.

Myers, who indie publishes her books, is delighted by the support she has received for her stories, which include “dark, gritty, emotional and often suspenseful moments…My readers appreciate my novels for what they are, which is a little different than your typical romance novel. They appreciate my attention to detail, my world-building, the fact that I don’t shy away from harsh and sensitive topics, the fact that I focus on the emotional connection between the characters and their personal growth more than including a ton of sex scenes. Don’t get me wrong, my books have that as well, but it isn’t overpowering as it can be in some novels.”

Romantic thriller vs. Mafia romance

“In a romantic thriller, the romance and suspense elements are divided equally, while in a Mafia romance, the romance is the most prominent plot line and is complemented by suspense and action occurring because of the Mafia world the characters exist in.”

Her writing process

Writing requires “a lot of planning, a lot of daydreaming and a lot of discipline. It takes about four months for me to complete a novel, not including post-production and marketing. All in all, it’s probably nine to 12 months from beginning a new novel to actually publishing it… All of my novels range from 100,000 to 130,000 words…Each scene, each chapter moves the story forward. If it doesn’t, it either won’t be written or it will be cut.”

About “Mine to Protect”

In “Mine to Protect” a Mafia kingpin and an FBI agent are no strangers to loss, and love is the last thing on their minds.

Alister Amato is rich, powerful and feared with a lust for blood. When an Organized Crime Task Force is called to investigate the slaughter of a rival criminal syndicate, agent Ariana Valentine sees similarities to the murder of her mother years before and “will stop at nothing to discover the truth.”

The “Unspeakable” novels

Emma Marshall's uneventful life is turned upside down when her fiancé assaults her. As Emma seeks answers, she is dragged into a world filled with secrets and dangerous enemies. Fighting for her life and the ones she loves, including her new love interest, Julian, may just be the death of her, at least the version of herself she's always known. “The Truth About Unspeakable Things” and “Bound by the Unspeakable” are emotional, dark, fast-paced reads that paint the picture of a woman battling herself as she tries to find her footing while enemies circle.

More about the author

After majoring in English at Northwestern State University, Myers taught in Rapides Parish before becoming a full-time author. “Although my work so far has fit into the romantic suspense and Mafia romance realms, I do hope to branch into contemporary romance and romantic comedy one day. I have enough book ideas to keep me writing for years to come…I’m excited to see where my writing will take me.”
