Shreveport Fire Department maintains elite Class 1 Fire Insurance Rating

On Wednesday the Shreveport Fire Department announced that the city recently received a report that states that the City of Shreveport will maintain its current Public Fire Protection Classification of Class 1 for residential and commercial properties.

Cities are rated by the Property Insurance Association Louisiana from 1 – 10, with 1 being the highest obtainable and most desirable score.

The Class 1 ratings consist of an evaluation of 50% fire department, 40% water (including water pressure, primarywater size, infrastructure, and pumping capacity) and 10% communications. The Shreveport Fire Department is 1 of 15 departments within the State of Louisiana to earn that Class 1 rating.

This is essential to citizens because Louisiana law mandates that better fire district ratings translate into commercial and residential property insurance savings. La. R.S. 22: 1460(I) requires that insurers reduce premiums as fire grading improves to a Class 1.

The City of Shreveport received its first Class 1 Fire Rating in 1998; followed by ratings in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2017 and most recently in 2022 by Property Insurance Association Louisiana. The Fire and Water Departments havemaintained the Class 1 status every grading year.
