Shreveport officials outline safety procedures for Mardi Gras parades

The City of Shreveport is gearing up for Mardi Gras. According to Visit Shreveport-Bossier, Mardi Gras delivers a massive boost to the Shreveport-Bossier economy each year.

In 2023, the direct impact of five area parades was estimated to be more than $10 million, and indirect spending and media value raised the total economic impact to more than $19 million.

"This requires a huge amount of coordination to have a safe and good time in Shreveport," Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux said.

On Wednesday, local public safety agencies met on the grounds of the parade route to remind the public of some safety tips during this festive season.

Shreveport Fire Chief Clarence Reese said, "We want to make sure that while we're ready, that you're ready."

Tips from the Shreveport Fire Department

  • Know where you are in case of an emergency. Reese said, "it is okay to use landmarks. We are very familiar with the area."

  • While using burn pits be aware of your surroundings and bring copious amounts of water to put the flame out.

Shreveport Fire Department will have fire trucks along the route in case of emergencies.

"I'm very excited about the events that are forthcoming on Saturday," Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said. "I want to thank all of the area law enforcement partners and even those from out of state who are pitching in on Saturday to help us make sure that this event is as safe as it possibly can be."

This year local law enforcement from state, parish and city will be pitching in to make sure these events run smoothly. "We are so fortunate to have joined our local law enforcement partners this year to participate in this Mardi Gras season," Louisiana State Police Public Information Officer LeAnn Hodges said.

She continued by informing the public that impaired driving is illegal. "If you do plan on consuming alcoholic beverages, please make sure that you have a designated driver to get you and your family home safely," Hodges said.

"Your decision can save a life," said Vanessa Braggs, representative for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is asking parade goers to be mindful of their children. Caddo Sheriff's Office Captain John May said, "Most of the incidents we had last year in our particular areas were children that were not supervised and were either hit by a car or in a situation where they were able to consume alcohol."
