Shrill Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

It's time to say goodbye to Hulu's Shrill. The groundbreaking Aidy Bryant–led show is not coming back after season three, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  

The show centers on Annie (Bryant), a self-described fat woman who's on a mission to change her life but not her body. For two seasons, we've watched her navigate life, love, and work, all in a body that the world tells her is wrong. And now we're going to see the final chapter

At the end of season two, fans watched Annie step into her power by way of dumping her loser boyfriend, Ryan (Luka Jones), and demand better for herself when it comes to relationships—and life. Bryant posted on January 27 that the show's final season is coming this spring.

“Shrill has been one of the most creatively satisfying experiences of my life, a true labor of love for me and everyone who worked so hard on it,” Bryant said in a statement Wednesday, January 27, per THR. “We are incredibly proud of this upcoming third and final season and are so grateful to the audience who connected with this story. I am deeply honored to have worked so closely with the writers, cast, and crew to make Shrill while continuing my work at SNL, it is a time I will never forget. I have endless love for our crew in Portland, and I am excited to get back to New York and rejoin my other work family at SNL in the meantime.”

Here’s everything we know so far about what to expect in season three: 

Filming has already wrapped. Bryant shared an Instagram selfie in December 2020 with her costar Lolly Adefope, who plays her best friend on the show. “That’s a wrap on @shrillhulu season 3! love this cast and crew more than I could ever explain. see you sooooon. 💕✨🌲”

The premiere date. Shrill season three will premiere May 7, the show confirmed in February, alongside a new teaser trailer: 

It will pick up after Annie dumped her ex. THR reveals Annie is “energized by her breakup with her dud boyfriend Ryan and her newfound momentum at work” and that she “feels like everything is finally falling into place for her.” 

“We feel incredibly lucky to have worked with the brilliant Aidy Bryant over the past three years to tell Annie’s story and we’re proud that Aidy and the team are able to reward fans with a perfect ending to the series,” says Hulu's V.P. of content development, Billy Rosenberg. “Shrill has received well-deserved praise and acclaim and has been an important part of Hulu’s comedy brand. A huge congratulations and thank you to Aidy, [showrunner] Ali Rushfield, Lindy West, Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks, and the entire teams at Broadway Video and Brownstone Productions.”

Annie is dating around and shaking things up. On April 12, the first full-length trailer for the third season premiered, giving us a glimpse at Annie's further adventures. She's juggling men, new assignments at work, and generally giving less of a fuck than ever. Watch, below.
