SHS baseball splits with Dowagiac, Colon sweeps

The Sturgis baseball team split a pair of games with Dowagiac on Friday.

The Trojans won the first game, 5-4.

“We played solid all-around in the opener,” Sturgis coach Drew Rutenbar said. “Guys were able to put down some nice bunts when needed”

Sturgis broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. Matt Wynes connected on a base hit that scored Sam Rehm to put the Trojans ahead in the game.

Sturgis also got an RBI base hit from Taner Patrick, Hunter Kosmerick and Luke Herman in the game. Rehm singled to reach base safely, as did Dakota Luce.

Gibson Cary pitched all seven innings, he struck out three while not allowing an earned run in the contest.

“Gibson Cary did a nice job for us on the mound,” Rutenbar said. “He was able to stay focused on the job as the game went back and forth a few times.”

Dowagiac won the second game, 8-0. The Chieftains scored twice in the second and fourth innings, posted three in the third and one more in the sixth.

The Trojans were held to four hits in the game. Patrick, Justin Herblet, Luce and Zach Green each connected on a single in the game.

Kosmerick, Gavyn Moore, Wynes and Ian Smith each saw time on the mound, they combined to allow just two earned runs.

Colon sweeps Litchfield

The Colon baseball teams won a pair of games over Litchfield on Friday,

In the opener, Colon scored six in the first, twice in the third, four times in the fourth and five times in the fifth inning.

Josh West clubbed a home run in the game, he drove in a pair of runs.

Dominick Mock collected two hits and two RBI, Maverick Downs hit a single and a double in the game. Both Kaleb Bissett and Caleb Jones drove in a pair of runs with a base hit.

Scott Frye drove in one with a double in the game. Kaleb Johnson walked three times and drove in one run as well. Justin Wickey was credited with an RBI in the game.

Downs pitched the opening 3 1/3 innings. He struck out six. West pitched the final 1 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Colon collected only four hits in the second game, but it was good enough to get the win.

West hit a double and drove in two runs. Mock clubbed a single that drove in one, both Downs and Tucker Lafler registered a hit as well.

Kaiden LaClair pitched the opening four innings, he struck out eight. Bissett pitched the final two innings and struck out one.
