SHS softball wins two over Colon

The Sturgis softball team earned a pair of wins over visiting Colon Tuesday evening.

The wins for the Trojans came by way of 10-3 and 14-9 scores.

In the opener, the two teams combined for 24 hits. Sturgis trailed 1-0 in the second inning before scoring four times. The Lady Trojans would add three more in the third to take a 7-1 lead.

Reese Williams crossed the plate for Colon on the opening run of the game, it came in the second inning. She stole third base and would score on an error on the same play.

Sturgis would equal the game on an inside-the-park home run from Angela Cary to open the home half of the second inning. Sturgis would then score three runs with two outs in the inning.

Hannah Stielau started the rally with a walk. Haylee Pappas then singled behind her before Leah Yunker hit an inside-the-park home run to make the score 4-1.

The inning continued with Kennedy Finnerman walking and then Riley Northrop hitting a double behind her. But that’s where the offense would end for SHS in the inning.

In the third, Stielau and Yunker each hit an RBI single.

Colon would score in the fourth on a single from Riley Kyle that scored Peighton Stouder.

Cary would collect an RBI single for Sturgis in the fourth.

Colon answered that with an RBI double from Kelsey Burgess in the fifth, scoring Haven McClish, this made the score 8-3.

Sturgis added two in the fifth, once on an RBI groundout from Northrop and one on an RBI single from Madison Webb.

Burgess and Kyle each recorded an RBI for Colon. Tatum Cline collected a pair of hits. Williams and McClish each had a base hit as well.

Yunker drove in four on four hits for Sturgis, Cary collected four hits and drove in two. Gracie Pagels had two hits, Northrop and Pappas did as well. Finnerman, Webb, Olivia Miller and Stielau added one hit.

Northrop picked up the win, striking out nine in seven innings. Andi Borgert took the loss for Colon, but did strike out seven hitters.

Colon scored first in the second game as well, it came with two outs. Charlee Kyle doubled, Stouder then doubled behind her as they traded places and made it 1-0.

Sturgis scored five times in the first and after two innings the score was 6-3 Trojans. The two teams would trade five runs in their next at bats, Sturgis added two in the fourth to make the score 13-8.

McClish recorded two hits for Colon in the game, driving in two. Stouder drove in two runs. Both Burgess and Williams had an RBI base hit while Charlee Kyle, Riley Kyle, Cline and Liv Johnson each had a base hit.

Yunker totaled three hits for Sturgis while Mia Martinez, Northrop and Webb collected two. Cary drove in two with one hit, Pappas drove in one with a base hit.

Cary threw the opening 2 1/3 innings, striking out three. Both Webb and Northrop threw as well, striking out a combined six.

Alyssa Hess and Borgert combined for three strikeouts for Colon.
