SHS students help Salvation Army with 10th food drive

STURGIS — This year marked a decade of help from Sturgis High School students to the Salvation Army for a food drive.

Cindy Logan began the food drive 10 years ago for SHS students to help the Salvation Army around Thanksgiving. This year, students brought in more than 1,000 food and goods for the drive.

Sturgis High School students, and freshmen class advisor Matt Henningsen, brought in more than 1,000 donations for the Salvation Army this year.

Typically, the drive is an advisory against advisory contest, but this year it was switched up and the four classes competed against each other, Logan said.

The freshmen class wound up being the winners this year. Freshmen club leader Matt Henningsen, a social studies teacher at the high school, said he was happy with the first-year student's drive.

"More than any freshmen class I've interacted with so far, these kids are prepared and want to be involved," he said.

Incentives for students to participate came from a variety of teachers for the food drive.

Additionally, each student who brought in items for the drive were rewarded on Tuesday with an ice cream sundae. The canned food items and other donations were delivered to the Salvation Army on Monday by students and staff.

As a result of his class bringing in the most donations, Henningsen was awarded the "Golden Can Award" to be prominently displayed in his classroom.

Logan, who has been spear-heading the drive for 10 years now, said it was an easy decision to start the drive.

"I'm proud of it," she said. "It was a little tough this year, but we're sure the Salvation Army will be grateful for the students' volunteering for this."
