SHS tennis beats Paw Paw, 6-2

The Sturgis tennis team hosted Paw Paw on Wednesday for a Wolverine Conference matchup. The victory went to the host Lady Trojans at Augspurger Courts, the score was 6-2 on the day.

The victory helped Sturgis draw even on the season with a record of 1-1. It was the team’s first action since coming back from Spring Break.

Sturgis took care of business in singles action, winning all four matches. Each of those wins came in straight sets for the Trojans.

Rylee Carver won her match at first singles. She beat Sally Laughlin by a score of 6-1 and 6-0.

Emily Schuller picked up a victory at second singles. That win came over Alyssa Crain with a score of 6-1 and 6-1. Also winning was Tess Scheske at third singles. She took care of Maya Pratt with a win at 6-0, 6-0.

Gracie Perry finished with a double bagel win at fourth singles. She beat Maggie Edwards with a 6-0, 6-0 score.

Sturgis and Paw Paw each won two matches in doubles action.

The Trojans won at second and fourth doubles.

Katherine Steele and Ava Stewart won at second doubles. They defeated Chloe Kooi and Kate Rentschler from Paw Paw by a score of 6-4 and 6-0.

SHS picked up a straight sets win at fourth doubles. There, the team of Lauren Whitehead and Chloe Clark beat Brynn Flanders and Mary Stewart by a score of 6-2 and 6-0.

In first doubles action, Paw Paw earned a win in straight sets. The team of Hannah Conway and Amber Cowin beat Sturgis’ team of Johanna Rooyakkers and Maddie Golden by a score of 6-1 and 6-2.

Also winning for Paw Paw was the third doubles team. That match was the only one on the day to reach three sets. There, the Paw Paw team of Krysti Floyd and Aili Shaughnessy won over Bella Cullifer and Rosa Soto. The Trojan duo won the opening set at 6-2, but Paw Paw won the second and third sets at 6-4 and 6-2.

In junior varsity action, Sturgis piled up seven victories on the day. The Trojans won all four singles matches.

Hannah Ritchie won 8-3 at first singles, Mikayla Wickey picked up an 8-1 win at second singles. Kylie Stevens won her match at third singles by a score of 8-3 and Arianna Terwedo won her match at fourth singles with a score of 8-2.

Natalie Randall and Marlee Smith won 8-1 in first doubles play. The team of Nghi Ngo and Piper Sterling won their match at third doubles, it came by a score of 8-0.

Sturgis also won at fourth doubles. The team of Bailey Cates and Kylie Stevens won that match, 8-3.

Dropping an 8-3 match for Sturgis was the second doubles team of Lexzi Scott and Julieta Sandoval.

Three Rivers, Harper Creek play to tie 

Three Rivers and Harper Creek played to a 4-4 tie on Tuesday evening in prep tennis action.

Three Rivers won all four of the singles matches for the day.

Abigail Lemacks beat Rachel Osterhart with a score of 6-4, 7-5 at first singles. In second singles action, Emily Workman won her match over Rory Randels in three sets at 6-4, 4-6 and 10-5.

Arabella Mangold won at third singles. She beat Amelia Lutzke with a 6-0, 6-0 score. Also winning at fourth singles was Laynie Zabonick over Haylie Szarejko with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
