Lara Trump, BOLD TV: “Listen, it’s not fair to you and we all get that, but this is so much bigger than any one person. It is a little bit of pain, but it’s going to be for the future of our country, and their children and their grandchildren, and generations after them will thank them for their sacrifice. ... I know people have families, they have bills to pay, they have mortgages, they have rents that are due. But the president is trying every single day to come up with a good solution here.”

OUR VIEW: Let them eat (food bank) cake

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, CNBC: “It’s kind of disappointing that the air traffic controllers are calling in sick in pretty large numbers. ... The banks and credit unions should be making credit available to them. ... When you think about it, these are basically government-guaranteed loans because the government has committed these folks will get back pay once this whole thing gets settled down. So there really is not a good excuse why there should be a liquidity crisis. Now, true, the people might have to pay a little bit of interest. But the idea that it’s paycheck or zero is not a really valid idea. There’s no reason why some institution wouldn’t be willing to lend. ... You’re talking about 800,000 workers, and while I feel sorry for the individuals that have hardship cases ... you’re talking about a third of a percent on our GDP. So it’s not like it’s a gigantic number overall.”

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, news conference: “I’ve met with my individual staff members and God bless them. They’re working for free. They’re volunteering. But they do it because they believe government service is honorable and they believe in President Trump.”
