Sibley Public Library celebrates 90 years of Lego

Aug. 2—SIBLEY, Iowa. — The Sibley Public Library is throwing a birthday party, and everyone is invited — but it's not a party for a person. It's a party for Legos, the brightly-colored interlocking plastic bricks that have captivated the imagination of kids and adults for 90 years.

"Lego does a great job at providing books and reading material as well as toys," said Youth Services Coordinator Rachel Galvin, who described herself as "a big fan" of Legos.

Each year before school starts, Galvin likes to have a big event for kids that celebrates a milestone, and since Lego is celebrating "90 years of play" in 2022, she saw an opportunity for fun.

All ages are welcome at the free event from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Sibley Public Library for Lego bingo, mad lib Lego, Lego scavenger hunt, Lego craft and Lego guessing games. The Lego Movie, with an interactive twist, will start at 3 p.m.

Kids will have a chance to create a paper Lego puppet and participate in an interactive story where they will build things that will be featured in the story. They'll also get to play minifig bingo, using cards with different Lego minifig characters on them.

"We are also going to be doing a group build, where we have a Lego wall — we're going to be using Lego dots and once everybody's completed it, it's going to be a picture," Galvin said, adding that she wanted to keep the subject of the Lego "painting" a surprise.

For the movie, participants will get a bag of items and a script, and at certain points in the movie, they'll have to pull something out and participate along with the movie.

Children will also get a chance to hone their estimation and counting skills with Lego guessing games, trying to guess how many bricks are in a jar or how high a Lego-based object would be.

Prizes, including Lego books and actual Legos, may be won throughout the day, too.

While the fun is aimed at elementary-aged kids and middle-schoolers, all ages are welcome, and Galvin said she hoped it would be a family event.

"I'm slowly building up my Lego collection," Galvin said.
