WORCESTER — The spot that was home to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for nine decades is being reworked into a 370-unit apartment complex.

The site has been busy in recent weeks, with wrecking crews clearing away the brick community center and a large crane lifting sections of a parking garage into place. Travelers on adjacent Interstate 290 have been able to watch the progress.

Mount Carmel Church, built in 1929 by Italian immigrants, was razed three years ago after church officials deemed the weakening structure too expensive to repair.

Wood Partners, a Georgia company with a Boston office, bought the property from the church for $5.6 million. The deal covered multiple parcels along Mulberry Street, in the shadow of the highway.

The project, Alta on the Row (originally called Alta Seven Hills), will have a mix of units with one, two and three bedrooms. The first units are expected to be ready by December 2023, with the project completed by May 2024, according to Wood Partners.

A parking garage is taking shape about where the church once stood.
