Sidney Tomasso named Empire 8 Player of The Year

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – A Waverly standout continues to shine in college basketball.

St. John Fisher junior guard Sidney Tomasso was named Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Player of The Year. Tomasso was also named to the Empire 8 Conference first team for the second consecutive year after a special season.

This marks the first Cardinal to win the Empire 8 MVP since Melissa Hartman in 2005-06. Sidney also earned E8 Conference Player of The Week three times this season.

Tomasso has been the go-to player on the offensive side for St. John Fisher this year. Sidney started 22 of 25 games and finished first on the team in points per game (16.0, second-best in the conference) and second in overall points (351).

She was third in the conference in free-throw percentage (.785) and finished the regular season in eighth in the conference in rebounds per game (6.9) and field goal percentage (.423).

St. John Fisher (22-4) beat Hartwick 62-50 in the Empire 8 Semifinals Thursday night. Tomasso had 13 points in the game.

Next up is the Empire 8 Championship Saturday vs. Houghton Saturday at 1 PM with a chance to send the Cardinals to their third-straight NCAA tournament.
