The Siena men's basketball program received a commitment Monday from Taihland Owens, a 6-foot-5 perimeter player from Canton, Georgia.

"Siena checked all the boxes for me," Owens said in a phone interview with The Daily Gazette.

A 17-year-old who played at Cherokee High School, Owens announced his commitment with a social-media post. Owens said his top schools as he neared making his decision were Siena and Northeastern; his verbalcommits.com profile also lists the guard as having scholarship offers from Appalachian State, Georgia Tech, Iona, VCU and Xavier.

Owens said Siena head coach Carmen Maciariello and assistant coach Antoni Wyche led his recruitment to Siena.

"I felt they had my best interests [in mind] for the future," Owens said.

Owens is the third member of Siena's 2021 recruiting class. He joins Javian McCollum, a 6-foot-2 guard from Florida, and Jared Billups, a 6-foot-4 guard from Maryland.

At 6-foot-5 and 180 pounds, Owens said one of his top priorities for his freshman season is "to get stronger."

"And I want to do whatever it takes to win," Owens said.

This report will be updated.
