Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. set to give away free baby resources in national initiative

Jan. 12—THOMASVILLE- The Kappa Psi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is set to give away several free baby resources in its national initiative known as Project CRADLE Care. The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Thomasville Resource Center located at 501 Varnedoe St., from noon until 2 p.m.

The Initiative is one of the sorority's essential programs designed to raise awareness of disparate and inequitable maternal and infant health outcomes that Black women endure through community outreach, advocacy, education, and training. In so doing, Sigma Gamma Rho aims to change outcomes and disparities in the community.

Sigma Gamma Rho alumnae chapters across the nation have simultaneously hosted prenatal education fairs to provide "a wealth of information, resources, and tools for women of childbearing age to help ensure a healthy baby." Project CRADLE Care is a community-based collaboration.

Soror Caryn Vandergriff, the organizer of the project, said that the community baby shower will not only provide free food, but also entertainment, supplies, and resources available for the public.

"Project CRADLE Care is an opportunity for families in the community to receive free prenatal care, free clothing, and information about available resources in the community. It's a chance to provide a healthier opportunity for new and expecting mothers to get everything they need for their families," she said.

The Kappa Psi Sigma Chapter was chartered Oct. 28, 2008, in Valdosta, Georgia. They serve nine South Georgia counties including, Atkinson, Ben Hill, Berrien, Cook, Grady, Lanier, Lowndes, Thomas, and Tift. The chapter began hosting the community-wide baby shower in Lowndes County in 2016. The upcoming event will mark the second time the chapter has hosted it in Thomasville for the surrounding community.
