Sign warned hikers of bear activity in the area — until bears came and ripped it up

Bears are pretty active this time of year, so officials placed signs warning hikers of bear activity on a trail in southeast Arizona.

But the bears had other ideas.

They tore it to shreds, according to an ironic photo posted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson. The photo shows what looks like a plastic sign snapped in half and hanging by a nail on a shredded wooden post.

The remaining half of the sign seems to warn hikers that a bear had been spotted in the area recently.

“Unbearable: A Bear Warning sign damaged by black bears using the post it was hung on as a ‘rub tree’ at Riggs Lake on Mt. Graham,” officials said in the July 6 Facebook post. “Note the damaged timbers.”

Bears rub on trees to mark their scent and to scratch their itches, officials explained.

“Bear activity remains high in SE AZ,” officials said. “Report sightings to 623-236-7201.”
