Significant wastewater leak occurs in Asheboro

Water quality and safety remained unchanged following a recent wastewater overflow event near 343 NC Highway 42 North in Asheboro.

According to Asheboro city officials, the Nov. 12 overflow event consisted of a waste spill greater than 1,000 gallons.

In North Carolina, cities are required by law to report overflow events that reach or exceed 1,000 gallons.

"House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999 requires that municipalities, animal operations, industries, and others who operate waste handling systems issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters," reads information from the city.

The spill that occurred on Nov. 12 was more than 3 times that amount.

"Approximately 3,350 gallons from a sewer main near 343 NC Hwy 42 N [leaked]," reads information provided by the city. "The overflow was due to “Grease” in the main."

The overflow did not impact drinking water, according to the city.

"There was no apparent environmental impact from this overflow and City of Asheboro Drinking Water was not affected," according to the city. "The Division of Water Quality in Winston-Salem has been notified of this overflow. For additional information, contact the Superintendent of Wastewater Collection at (336) 626-1234, ext. 2205."
