The event had speeches, turban tying and food customary to the festival.

News Center 7 spoke with people at the event to help raise awareness in students and staff about Sikh culture and faith.

“This is when wheat is ready to be harvested, other crops are ready to be harvested,” said Aasees Kaur. “So, just inherently, there is a lot of community gathering and joy around this.”

The event was sponsored by the University Center for International Education, Asian Student Association and the Sikh Society of Dayton.
