Having just exhausted themselves running to victory in the 200 meters, Simi Valley’s twin double league champions took a moment to catch their breath, lounging underneath the flag pole behind the finish line.

Until they were roused by a race official informing them of where to collect their medals.

With their eyes on long postseason runs, junior Jaelon Barbarin swept the boys 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and senior Joey Nations swept the boys long jump and high jump at the Coastal Canyon League Track and Field Championships on Friday night at Moorpark High.

“I’m pushing him, he’s pushing me,” Barbarin said of Nations. “We both have goals we want to set for each other.”

Barbarin took the 100 in 10.60 seconds and then set the meet record in the 200 in 21.61, with Nations finishing second at 21.98.

“I was coming out here to win,” Barbarin said. “I had a great season. The season’s over, now it’s postseason. … It was great. To get the record for the two, that also feels great.”

Nations took long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 9 inches and the boys high jump by clearing 6-3.

The Cal State Northridge commit was just off his personal bests of 21-9.5 and 6-4, respectively, in both events.

“I just really wanted to qualify, get first and take home a medal,” the said. “But I felt like for this meet, there's a lot of stuff in my long jumping that I really could have worked on. … I have a lot of stuff to work on improve. So I look forward to working on that.

Oak Park junior Kymara Brodie swept the girls sprints, winning the 100 in a personal record of 11.93 seconds and the 200 in 25.14.

“It was really just about pushing myself and working on the form that I've been just working on and doing drills on the whole season,” Brodie said. “So it was just putting it all together and seeing what came out of it.”

The defending league and Division 3 section champion in the 100 is preparing for another postseason run.

“I'm hoping to go back this year and hopefully win again,” Brodie said. “I want to go as far as I possibly can, and really just see where my limit is.”

Royal junior Jonah Bazerkanian prepared to attack the 3,200 in the postseason by winning both distance events.

He won the boys 1,600 meters in a PR of 4:16.09 and the 3,200 in 9:30.00.

“It takes a lot of strength work, definitely,” Bazerkanian said. “I tried to stay as even as possible … coming in super controlled and smooth. I think I had a lot left so I’m really excited going into CIF.”
