Feb. 24—West Caldwell has a new yet familiar face roaming the sideline this season as former Hibriten assistant Monte Simmons takes over the Warriors' program. Simmons was with the Panthers from 2001-15 when he became the head coach at West Iredell High School, a position he held until July when he stepped down to take over for Mike Biggerstaff at West Caldwell.

The Warriors have a solid nucleus returning. Senior linebacker Isaiah Cornell and senior linebacker/running back Isaiah Gause are back, as is junior LB/RB Cameron Beavers. Beavers is a bruising runner who isn't afraid to get behind his pads and do the dirty work in short-yardage situations. Senior Fazion Dickson moves from quarterback to running back, and his speed gives the Warriors a legitimate home-run threat. Junior receiver Taiwan Perkins provides the Warriors with another weapon on the outside who is capable of scoring anytime he touches the ball.

Simmons said both he and those key returning players are eager to turn the page on last season's one-win season and start rebuilding the program.

"I believe the returning players have seen the past," he said. "Now they are looking for a brighter present and future for the program. Those are the experiences they these young men bring to the table."

Simmons will put the ball in the hands of sophomore quarterback Jaylen Patterson, saying he brings a lot of energy to the team.

In keeping with the theme or rebuilding, Simmons says he feels like the fortunes of the football program are on the rise.

"I believe we this team can lay the foundation for great things to come here at West Caldwell High School," he said.

The Warriors open their season at East Burke on Feb. 26.
