The sports world was rocked when Simone Biles announced that she would not be competing in the U.S. women’s gymnastics team final at the Tokyo Olympics, citing mental health issues that made it unsafe for her to continue. On Monday, however, Biles made public her plans to compete in the balance beam final on Tuesday.

Biles will be competing alongside Sunisa “Suni” Lee, who made history last week as the first Hmong American athlete to win gold at the Olympics. “We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!” U.S.A. Gymnastics tweeted.

Biles has altered the face of gymnastics—if not changed sports history—with the honesty and vulnerability she’s displayed during the Tokyo Olympics, telling the world about the “twisties” that made her unable to differentiate up from down and writing on Instagram, “The outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before.” Hopefully, Biles will continue to receive widespread support and praise for emphasizing her mental and physical health, regardless of the outcome of the balance beam final.
