Simple green barn becomes a home with a voice

Missy Orr, co-owner of LeCroy Interiors in Greenville, SC, has a design philosophy that every house has a voice.

In 2017, a simple green barn sitting on 4.5 acres in northern Greenville County spoke to Missy as she passed it several times a week.  Corner Pocket Farm had been built to board neighborhood horses and miniature ponies in 1985 and was surrounded by nature and beauty: Hogback Mountain, Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve, Hyder Peach Farm.  Trusting Missy’s vision, Fritz Orr agreed to purchase the post and beam barn for his bride to transform into their primary residence.

Missy’s goal was to respect the original details as much as possible.  The first step of the three-year project was to remove all the original Douglas fir shiplap that lined the interior walls of the barn.  After completing the wiring, plumbing, installing windows and drywall, the original wooden boards were replaced.   The original barn area became the entryway, living area, guest room, bathroom and laundry room. The hay loft became sleeping quarters for the Orrs’ grandchildren.

Original hitching post hardware and evidence of horses cribbing was left intact on interior wooden hand-hewn beams.

A kitchen, study, owner’s suite and workshop/garage were added to the back of the original structure.  The entire project was designed and managed by Missy, which allowed her the opportunity to showcase her creativity.

Fritz and Missy say they loved the history of the property, being a part of the transformation, and the post and beam construction, which gave their home organic and rustic textures throughout.

The Orrs recently sold this special property, and while their grandchildren were sad to leave behind Camp Bear-a-Wallah (the children's play fort lovingly built at the back of Corner Pocket Farm), the couple is once again listening to the voice of a new and unique property as it becomes home.

This month we welcome our Marci Masitto as our TALK Greenville At Home Contributor. We asked Marci to tell a little but about herself.

As a young girl, I grew up fascinated by all things related to home. Daydreaming over Victoria magazine and wallpapering my bedroom as a teenager evolved into renovating and designing my personal homes as an adult.  This gave me the desire to help others with their homes by becoming an antique dealer at The Rock House Antiques and now a licensed realtor and Airbnb host.  Hiking local mountains, exploring, serving withing the community, reading, and dreaming up more creative projects fill my days.  My hope for TALK Greenville At Home this year is for readers to enjoy a variety of properties to inspire and create their own living spaces.
