Fans of The Simpsons have reacted with indignation after an adviser to Donald Trump compared Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris to Marge Simpson.

Jenna Ellis, one of Trump’s senior legal advisors and attorneys, said that Harris “sounds like Marge Simpson”.

Marge, voiced by Julie Kavner, is the matriarch of the Simpson family in the beloved long-running animation, and is sometimes depicted in some episodes as a stereotypical “housewife”.

Many people noted how the insult – an apparent dig at Harris’s credentials for the role of vice president - had backfired.

“Anybody being compared to Marge Simpson has lived their life right,” wrote one commenter.

“Calling Kamala Harris Marge Simpson is just about the coolest thing you can do for her,” wrote another, alongside a picture of Marge Simpson handcuffing her husband while she worked for the Springfield Police Department in the sixth season episode “The Springfield Connection”.

Someone else wrote: “Loyal, proud, beloved, the enduring conscience of Springfield, and not here for bulls***. Sounds good to me.”

But while many on the platform seemed keen on defending Harris from the barb, others were simply irked that Marge Simpson’s name had been besmirched.

The official Simpsons Twitter account responded by posting, “I will not tolerate any Marge Simpson slander”, alongside a collection of clip of the character from recent episodes.

“I hear people talking trash about my queen Marge Simpson,” wrote someone else, alongside images of the character looking menacing.
