The Sims 4 has added vitiligo to the game as part of its latest free update.

Vitiligo is a condition that causes patches of skin to lose colour or pigment. Players who download the newest patch will be able to create Sims who have vitiligo, with the option to choose from a range of patterns for a Sim's face, upper and lower torso, arms, and legs.

Sims of all ages can have vitiligo, while the skin tone of a Sim will affect the colour of their vitiligo.

"Skin details are an important area of focus for the dev team as we remain committed to expanding representation in The Sims 4," the developer said in a blog post. "Birthmarks, stretch marks, scars, and freckles have empowered our players to tell diverse and authentic stories, and today's update continues with these efforts.

"We have known for a while we wanted to add Vitiligo to the game, and we spent a lot of time learning about it and considering how to authentically provide it to players."

Vitiligo patterns can be added and removed from a Sim any time via the Create-a-Sim mode, and can layer with all face and body details, including tattoos and body hair, except for birthmarks.

Vitiligo in the game currently does not affect a Sim's body hair colour, but the developer confirmed that this is something they hope to implement "in the future".

In addition, The Sims 4 has partnered with supermodel Winnie Harlow for the update's launch. Simmers can download a Sim version of Harlow and her home from the gallery.

“It’s magical to see The Sims 4 team introduce this new Vitiligo feature,” Harlow said. “As a child, I spent a lot of time playing The Sims and I think it’s so beautiful to be able to represent your true self in-game.

"This partnership is a powerful statement encouraging players to embrace what makes them unique – both in-game and in real life.”

The free SDX drop was previously hinted at in the roadmap for January to April, and comes after the releases of the Castle Estate and Goth Galore Kits. Next on the roadmap are a "celebratory" Build Kit and a "co-created" Style Kit.

The Sims 4 is available on PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation.
