Singapore sports round-up (8-14 Jan): Mixed doubles shuttlers' Malaysia Open run, Bizad Charity Run raises over $550k

SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (8 to 14 January):

Mixed-doubles shuttlers' Malaysia Open campaign ends in semi-finals

Singapore's mixed doubles badminton duo Terry Hee and Jessica Tan came up short in their first BWF World Tour Super 1000 semi-final, as they lost 16-21, 16-21 to seventh-seeded South Koreans Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun at the Petronas Malaysia Open on Saturday (13 January).

The husband-and-wife pair, who had scored an upset win over sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand in Friday's quarter-finals at Kuala Lumpur's Axiata Arena, will take home US$18,200 and 9,000 BWF points in their bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The duo are in good form, following two tournament wins in the last two months - at the Irish Open in November and at the Guwahati Masters in India last month. They will be playing at next week's India Open in New Delhi.

Bizad Charity Run raises over $550,000

The Bizad Charity Run, the annual flagship running event by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, raised over $550,000 for the NUS Business School Alumni (NUSBSA) Student Experience Fund, NUSBSA Bursary Fund and TOUCH Community Services on Saturday (13 January).

Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law, flagged off the event at the NUS campus. Jointly organised by the NUS Business School Alumni Association and NUS Bizad Club, the event galvanises students, academicians, and alumni to care for the less fortunate business school students who may be facing financial difficulties.

Over the past 14 years, the Bizad Charity Run has attracted more than 12,500 participants and raised over $2.5 million. The fundraising drive is ongoing and the public can continue to make donations till 31 May.

More races at this year's Singapore Canoe Marathon

The 2024 Singapore Canoe Marathon (SCM), organised by the Singapore Canoe Federation (SCF), will be held on 20 and 21 January at the Sports Hub Water Sports Centre. Over 800 athletes will compete in categories from 8km to 28km in a test of endurance and skill.

To attract participants of varying skill levels, this year’s SCM spans two days instead of the usual one-day event, in order to cater to more races. This includes a Fun Family Race of 1.5km on 21 January, which is expected to draw 30 pairs of family members paddling with double sit-on-top kayaks. Para-canoe paddlers will also be taking part in 8 km races.

Spectators can also look forward to fun carnival games (free for all visitors), and explore exhibition booths by SCF, the National Kidney Foundation, and People’s Association. Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Alvin Tan, who has just come onboard as SCF’s new advisor, will be gracing the event as guest-of-honour.

Singapore Classic welcomes Porsche as title partner

The Singapore Classic - to be held at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club from 21 to 24 March - will welcome Porsche as its title partner, as the automotive company continues a long-standing relationship with the DP World Tour.

The US$2 million golf tournament is expected to feature a field that includes some of golf’s best players, as well as the sport’s up and coming stars. Last year’s event, won by South Africa’s Ockie Strydom, marked the return of the DP World Tour to Singapore for the first time since 2014.

The hole-in-one prize at the event will also see a Porsche sports car offered as a prize for the first time on the DP World Tour in Asia, with the recently-launched Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid as the prize for the professionals should they ace the 17th hole.
