Singapore students win 3 golds, 1 silver at International Geography Olympiad
SINGAPORE — A team of Singapore students have come in first at the 18th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) this year, beating over 200 participants from 53 other countries and territories.
The Singapore team received the largest number of gold medals in the Olympiad held virtually in Paris from 12 to 18 July, winning three gold medals and also one silver medal, said the Ministry of Education in a media release on Thursday (8 September).
At the iGeo and the other International Olympiads this year, students representing Singapore won a total of nine gold medals, 14 silver medals, and three bronze medals.
The iGeo gold medalists are Raffles Institution students Brian Lee Ming Jun and Lee Jun Rui Marcus as well as Wong Kang Zheng from Hwa Chong Institution. Anders Hong from Dunman High School won the silver medal.
Education Minister Chan Chun Sing wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday to congratulate the Singapore participants. Singling out Wong, Chan said the 17-year-old iGeo gold medalist is fascinated with drawing maps and transport routes.
"In fact, his love for maps is so great that he has even drawn up the complex Tokyo subway and suburban rail systems! (Wong)’s interest and hard work in geography paid off as he placed second in the world in the recently concluded 18th International Geography Olympiad," Chan said.
"Heartiest congratulations to all our students who have flown the Singapore flag high in the international arena this year, and I encourage everyone to continue to pursue your interests and passion."
The iGeo involved written, multimedia, and fieldwork tests, across physical and human geography topics, including a virtual fieldwork exercise set in Paris.
The other Singapore teams participating in the Informatics, Mathematical, Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads won a total of six gold medals, 13 silver medals and three bronzes.
