Singapore women's foil team stun top-ranked US at Fencing World Cup

SINGAPORE — Singapore's national women's foil fencing team caused a major upset at the Fencing World Cup in Belgrade on Monday (18 April), when they defeated top-ranked United States in the round of 16.

The team, comprising Amita Berthier, Maxine Wong, Cheung Kemei and Tay Yu Ling, were ranked 16th in the competition. However, they stunned the US team of Lauren Scruggs, Stefani Deschner, Jacqueline Dubrovich and Lee Kiefer 44-41 to advance into the quarter-finals.

Two-time SEA Games individual foil champion Berthier won all three of her bouts, defeating Scruggs 5-3, Deschner 6-3 and Dubrovich 6-4 to set Singapore on the way.

But it was Wong who clinched the all-important points for the momentous victory. With Singapore trailing 36-37 before her final bout, Wong defeated Scruggs 8-4 to send Singapore through.

In the quarter-finals, however, Singapore fell to Germany 33-45 and could not advance.
