Megan Danielle was overcome with emotions as she took the “American Idol” stage Monday, May 1, for a performance honoring her grandfather.

Danielle, from Douglasville, Georgia, was given the option of three songs to perform during Monday’s show, and she picked the Vince Gill classic “Go Rest High on That Mountain.”

It was a sentimental selection for Danielle, who reportedly sang the song during her grandfather’s funeral. Danielle was fighting back tears Monday after performing the heart-rending song.

She also received a hug from Luke Bryan, the coach who chose the song for Danielle. He called her performance “unbelievable.”

“What I love about you ... you’re never scared to tell everybody your faith,” Bryan said. “When I thought about that song, I just felt in my heart I couldn’t pick a better one than that for you.”

He went on to tell Danielle her rendition of the song was “perfect.”

Lionel Richie said Danielle has “the amazing ability” of being able to touch others with her voice.

“Your voice is so powerful when it comes down to just telling your story,” Richie told the Georgia singer.

By the end of the night, Danielle learned she had advanced to the show’s top eight.

“Thank y’all from the bottom of my heart,” she said in an Instagram post. “This was one of my most challenging performances but what a way to honor my papa!”

Monday was the second consecutive night performing on “American Idol.” Sunday, she sang Bonnie Raitt’s “Angel from Montgomery” to advance to the show’s top 10.

The top eight round will air Sunday, May 7, on ABC.
