Single-engine plane missing off coast of Boca Raton

A single-engine Lanclair 320 plane with at least one person on board went missing off the coast of Boca Raton on Friday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA lost detection of the aircraft about 17 miles south of Boca Raton, shortly before 12:30 p.m. Search and rescue authorities were notified, and the Coast Guard is searching for any sign of the plane.

Stations in Fort Lauderdale and Fort Pierce searched for the missing plane during the day, as well as air stations in Miami and Clearwater, according to Petty Officer Jose Hernandez, a spokesman with the 7th District Southeast.

Two Coast Guard cutters will search throughout the night, and at first light the Coast Guard will resume air searches, he said.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the missing plane to call the District 7 command center at 305-415-6800.

Earlier Friday, a small plane crashed west of Boynton Beach, reported WPEC-Ch. 12, a news partner of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Firefighters found the single-engine Cessna 172 in the field on its side behind the Whitworth Farms area, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

Two people were aboard; neither were injured.
