Single-vehicle crash in Marion Oaks claims life of driver

MARION OAKS − A single-vehicle crash killed the driver, and lone occupant, of a vehicle early Monday.

Here is what we know:

Who died?

Florida Highway Patrol troopers identified the driver only as a 22-year-old man from Indianapolis. The patrol no longer includes names in its press releases.

What happened?

According to the FHP news release, the man was driving an older model Saturn VUE sport utility vehicle southbound on Manor Oaks Manor. The vehicle, approaching a left curve, went off the roadway and onto the west grassy shoulder.

The SUV struck a mailbox in the 800 block of Marion Oaks Manor. The driver steered left to gain control of the SUV, but was unsuccessful, troopers said.

Authorities said the SUV rotated counter-clockwise as it arched back toward the roadway. The vehicle overturned multiple times while on the grassy shoulder and eventually stopped, facing east on its right side.

What happened to the driver?

During the crash, the driver was partially ejected out the front passenger front right window, according to the FHP news release. He was pinned underneath the SUV.

The southbound lane of Marion Oaks Manor was closed so troopers could investigate the crash.

When and where did this crash happen?

Marion County Fire Rescue officials pronounced the man dead at the scene. Troopers said the wreck took place at 12:40 a.m. along Marion Oaks Manor and Southwest 70th Avenue Road.
