Sinkhole closes area roadway in south St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – A massive sinkhole opens near Interstate 55 in south St. Louis.

We haven’t seen too many issues in terms of cars trying to get through because it’s a residential area but the damage from the massive sinkhole at Idaho Avenue and Blow Street can still be seen. Caution tape, cones, and barricades are blocking the intersection.

With the running water running underneath Idaho Avenue, the city’s water department has confirmed the situation as a 6-inch water main break. It appears the ground is also eroding, causing the part of Idaho to essentially collapse at Blow Street.

Fatal Ferguson house fire ruled a murder-suicide

FOX 2 spoke with someone who owned some property nearby and he was caught off guard by this situation. He was examining the scene but refrained from speaking on camera because he was a little shocked and worried about how it might affect the property he owns.

We’re told these pipes are old and there’s a lot of heavy equipment running through and that’s why things are starting to give way. To make things worse, there’s also a gas line right at the scene, so they are also calling out Spire and will have to shut off people’s water while crews work to get this under control.

This is about a block away from Loughborough and I-55. Drivers are urged to take an alternate route.
