Sinkhole closes Second Street NE in New Philadelphia

NEW PHILADELPHIA — A brick storm sewer manhole that failed was responsible for an eight-foot-deep sinkhole that developed in the middle of Second Street NE in downtown New Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.

Service Director Ron McAbier said city workers are going to put in a concrete patch as a temporary fix. Work is ongoing on the section of the street between E. High Avenue and Fair Avenue NE.

"We're fortunate that nothing major happened," he said.

McAbier said the work will begin once the project is put out for bid, a contractor can be hired and a manufacturer can build a new manhole.
