Sinkhole found on Sonora railway that saw a derailment days ago

(FOX40.COM) — Less than a week after a pair of tanker railcars derailed in the City of Sonora, a sinkhole was found along the same stretch of track on Wednesday, according to the Sonora Police Department.

Police said the sinkhole was found along the upper portion of Hospital Road, about 100 yards from where the two cars derailed on Friday.

Eastbound traffic along the roadway has been closed, except for residents, until further notice, according to police.

On Friday, two cars were derailed at a major intersection in Sonora causing damage to multiple vehicles and railroad infrastructure.

No injuries were reported but it did force the closure of S. Washington Street for several hours as crews worked to clear the derailment.

The tracks are operated by Sierra Northern Railway, which runs 105 miles of track at four different locations, according to Union Pacific.

The railway’s Oakdale division operates a connection with Union Pacific from Oakdale to Sonora. Other rail locations include West Sacramento to Woodland and Watsonville to Davenport.

Much of the railway’s traffic includes lumber, lumber products, grain, gypsum, wallboard, canned goods, plastics, chemicals, steel, ethanol and propane.
