Sinkhole repairs will slow down traffic on W Burnside

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A sinkhole that is being repaired is expected to slow down traffic near the intersection of West Burnside Street and Northwest Skyline Boulevard over the next week.

The Portland Bureau of Environmental Services announced Friday that delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected as construction occurs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Feb. 9.

The sinkhole, which first appeared in December, was the result of a broken stormwater pipe on private property next to West Burnside, officials said.

The repairs will require alternating lane closures at the intersection, with flaggers directing traffic and only allowing one direction of travel at a time. Officials encourage people to drive cautiously, observe where the flaggers are giving directions and use alternate routes, if possible.

Though the tentative plan for the repairs is noted as being through Feb, 9, BES said the work is weather-dependent and that the schedule could change.
