A sinkhole on St. Paul Boulevard in Irondequoit has been repaired.

UPDATE, FRIDAY, AUG. 18: A portion of St. Paul Boulevard will remain closed through the weekend and into next week, according to Monroe County officials. The county released the following statement Friday:

Work on the ongoing storm sewer repair was delayed Friday morning as a water main break at the intersection of St. Paul Boulevard and Armstrong Avenue flooded the work area. Monroe County Water Authority is currently on the scene repairing the water main. St. Paul Boulevard will remain closed between Paxton Road and Wimbledon Road while storm sewer repairs continue through the weekend and into next week.

ORIGINAL STORY: St. Paul Boulevard between Paxton and Wimbledon roads in Irondequoit will remain closed at least through Friday and possibly through the weekend because of a large sinkhole in the roadway, Monroe County wrote in an update shared Thursday morning on Twitter.

Crews working overnight to repair the sinkhole discovered a collapsed storm sewer pipe, which may lengthen the time needed for repairs.

The sinkhole appeared on Wednesday. A car that went into the sinkhole flipped onto its side before crews extracted it. The condition of those inside the vehicle was not immediately known.

The sinkhole appeared after the Rochester area received heavy rainfall throughout the night.

The affected road will be closed to all traffic in both directions from Covington to Paxton roads, including Armstrong Avenue and Westborne Road.

Residents and commuters are advised to seek alternative routes and to avoid the closed area.

A detour has been posted.
