Sioux Falls banker says he'll run for City Council

A Sioux Falls mortgage loan officer is the first person to publicly announce their candidacy for next year's Sioux Falls City Council elections.

Ryan Spellerberg made the announcement on Monday afternoon that he intended to run in the city's southwestern district, a seat currently held by Councilor Marshall Selberg, who is term limited.

Spellerberg's release named affordable housing, reducing crime, investing in infrastructure and expanding the city's park system as some of his main goals.

"Now, I want to take my skills and values to the city council and help guide the direction of our growing city. There are a lot of big issues in Sioux Falls, and I look forward to meeting with my neighbors, hearing their ideas, and moving this great community in the right direction," he wrote.

Spellerberg has lived in Sioux Falls since 2008, and currently works as a mortgage loan officer at First Bank and Trust.

He has yet to file a statement of organization for his municipal candidate campaign, but his announcement has already drawn support from Councilor Alex Jensen, who said "Let's go Ryan Spellerberg!" in a Facebook post.

Sioux Falls City Council elections are set for April 9, 2024. Four council seats will be up for election — the southwest, northwest and northeast districts, where councilors Selberg, Greg Neitzert and Pat Starr respectively are term limited, and one at-large seat currently held by Jensen, who has not yet declared whether he will run for re-election.
