Sioux Falls building permits continue to topple records thanks to Cherapa place, apartments
Building permit data continues to smash records, with the total value of permits issued hitting $1.77 billion – a 93.2% increase compared to last year at the same time, according to data from the City of Sioux Falls.
The City of Sioux Falls hit $1 billion in permit valuation for the first time ever in November 2021, and the city had already passed $1 billion for 2022 in July. As of the end of October, over 10,300 building permits have been issued, up from last year's October total of 6,384.
Here's a breakdown of this year's building permits to date. The following data are taken from the City of Sioux Falls.

New commercial permits topped $1.09 billion in updated numbers from October. That's up from last year's $343.8 million from the same time, and that's not the only area where the city is seeing an increase.

Other commercial areas--such as strip malls, hotels and restaurants--have also seen a dramatic increase, with numbers indicating more than $305 million spent, compared to last October's $36 million. Office, institutional and educational commercial buildings have also increased to $228.2 million – up from $43.3 million in October 2021.

Apartments top the new commercial building permits with a valuation of over $470.8 million. That has been highlighted by bigger projects, such as Cherapa Place.

While new commercial numbers continue to surpass records, the number of single-family units is lower than last year at 612, down from 782 in October 2021. But, there has been a sharp 104% increase in multiple-family units, with 3,255 planned in the city.
There have also been 74 manufactured new housing placements, up from 49 last year.
