Father and son Darin and Ryan Benning debuted their new food truck, The Hangover Hut, in Sioux Falls at the end of May.

“We couldn’t decide on a name for the truck for the longest time,” said the father, Darin Benning, “but then we came up with the slogan, and it kind of just stuck.”

The slogan is, “The only hangover you’ll want again and again,” referring to a “food hangover” one might get after eating too much good food, said Darin Benning, or the type of food people like to eat after getting a hangover.

The menu features burgers, fries, hot dogs and lamb chislic, which has been really popular so far. Ingredients like the meat and buns are all locally sourced, and the duo eventually wants to add biscuits and gravy to the menu, but for now they’re keeping things simple.

“As we get more comfortable and get our routine down, we’ll add more to it,” said soon-to-be 15-year-old Ryan, who will be a sophomore at Washington High School.

He and his father started working together at the Huset’s Speedway concessions before looking at running a hot dog cart last summer. When that plan didn’t pan out, they decided to open the food truck.

They bought the truck, which was once Chubby’s taco truck, in November and worked on installing new equipment and re-doing the outside. The logo was designed by Ahrendt Designs in Tea, South Dakota.

“It’s a lot of fun so far,” said Ryan. “I really like working with my dad, and it’s cool that we can do what we want and how we want it.”

Darin Benning works at Daktronics but went part time for the summer so he and Ryan could run the truck.

Ryan’s mother, Sara, also helps the two by managing the Facebook page so customers can know where and when the truck will be.

Both Darin and Ryan are big into the races and plan to take the food truck to the Canton Car Show, as well as Gold Addictions, Fridays on the Plaza and other places around the Sioux Falls area such as The Hive and Notaboom RV in Harrisburg.

“We have everything now,” said Darin Benning, “so now we’re ready to roll.”
