Sioux Falls homebuyer scammed out of nearly $50,000, police say

The Sioux Falls Police Department is looking into an incident that saw a local homebuyer scammed out of nearly $50,000.

The incident was reported to police by the victim on Sunday, according to Sgt. Robert Forster. The victim was a homebuyer in Sioux Falls that had been communicating with his title company and realtor through email.

The scammers pretended to be a title company and emailed the victim saying they needed him to send them $47,000 for closing fees and a down payment, Forster said.

The victim sent over $47,000 to the scammers before realizing it was a scam email. Forster did not say how the money was exchanged.

Detectives are now looking into scam as the victim tries to recover some of the money lost, Forster said.
