Sioux Falls man injured in standoff now faces multiple felonies, police say

The man who intentionally shot himself in the foot during an hours-long standoff last week in west central Sioux Falls has been released from the hospital, and now he's facing multiple felony charges, officials with the Sioux Falls Police Department said Tuesday morning.

Jaedyn Jesse James Davis, 19, of Sioux Falls, was booked Monday afternoon into the Minnehaha County Jail. He faces charges of aggravated eluding, attempting to commit a felony with a firearm, violation of a protection order, aggravated assault on a public officer and kidnapping in the first degree, abuse or cruelty to a minor younger than 7 years old and two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.

What happened?

At about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, officers with the violent crime division spotted the 19-year-old who was believed to be in possession of two vehicles that were reported stolen over the last week, according to Sam Clemens, a spokesperson for the Sioux Falls Police Department.

Clemens said at the time officers followed the van that Davis was a passenger in to a parking lot at the 2500 block of West 10th Street near Kiwanis Avenue, when the driver of the van went into a shop. Officers blocked the van in with unmarked police vehicles and the suspect jumped into the driver's seat and attempted to get out of the parking lot by ramming the police vehicles.

Davis was unsuccessful in getting out and reached into the back seat of the van, grabbing a hand gun and a 1-year-old child, Clemens said. He then held the child on his lap.

SWAT officers and hostage negotiators were called in, Clemens said. The child was released after midnight and was unharmed. The child, who is believed to have a connection to Davis, was placed into the custody of his mother.

Davis turned himself over to police hours later, at 1:30 a.m., Clemens said. As he was exiting the van, Davis fired the hand gun and shot himself in the foot.

Clemens said Tuesday morning the shot to the foot had been intentional, although the motive behind the action remains unclear.

More details about the charges were not yet available Tuesday morning through the Minnehaha County Clerk's Office, but his initial hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
