Sioux Falls police officer put in 'chokehold,' suspect arrested

The Sioux Falls Police Department arrested a man after he assaulted an officer who was questioning him.

Ryan Lane Bowker, 34, from Sioux Falls, was arrested for aggravated assault on law enforcement, obstructing an officer, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance, according to police spokesperson Sam Clemens.

Police received a call at about 2 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of South Spring Avenue, after apartment residents found a man either sleeping or passed out near a set of stairs, Clemens said.

A female officer responded, and while waking Bowker up, was attacked by him. At one point, he even grabbed at her gun belt, Clemens said.

The residents who called in the incident tried unsuccessfully to get Bowker off the officer. Other officers arrived to help, and subdued the suspect, but not before he put the officer in a "chokehold," Clemens said.

Police found a syringe and some baggies with small amounts of meth on Bowker, Clemens said.

Bowker was arrested and is being held at the Minnehaha County Jail.

The officer received minor injuries from the assault, Clemens said.
