'Sip, Sip Hooray': MadTree brewery celebrates its 10th anniversary

MadTree Brewing Co. is celebrating its 10th anniversary Saturday, and it's bringing back an old favorite to celebrate.

The first Cincinnati brewery to can its own beer is planning an all-day birthday bash to celebrate. That's right. After a two-year hiatus, Bonanza is back.

What's Bonanza?

It's an all day party the brewery has tagged "Sip, Sip Hooray!" from 11 a.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday morning at its Oakley Taproom, 3301 Madison Road.

The event features a cake-baking contest, rare beers from guest breweries, a DANCEFIX performance, live music, karaoke and food trucks.

There is overflow parking available in the Crossroads parking lot across the street. Cars may not be left overnight.

“This is one of our favorite traditions here at MadTree,” brewery co-owner Kenny McNutt, said in a release. “And it’s so nice to say that it’s finally back. Bonanza epitomizes everything we love to celebrate including our community, friends, local partners and businesses as well as other breweries.”

The owners say that 1% of all sales during Bonanza will be donated back to local nonprofits like Cincinnati Parks Foundation, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Adventure Crew, and Groundwork ORV.

How did MadTree Brewing grow?

MadTree Brewing Co. was founded by Brady Duncan, Jeff Hunt and Kenny McNutt, who were brewing beer as a hobby before deciding to expand and refine their products. The trio sold draft beer from its first batches of brew at the Cincy Winter Beerfest in 2013.

They opened a taproom in Columbia Township later that year, launching what has proved to be one of its most popular brews, "PsycHOPathy IPA.

The brewery partners eventually outgrew it first location and rehabbed the former manufacturing facility for paper maker RockTenn in Oakley on Madison Road in 2017, close to that first taproom on Kennedy Avenue.

MadTree Alcove, a bar and restaurant on Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine, opened last year in a building constructed in 1873.

What's the best beer at MadTree?

MadTree classic Psychopathy is a 6.9% Indian Pale Ale with floral and citrus notes.

Fifty West Brewing Co, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary last month, was also founded by a trio of friends. Whit Hesser, Blake Horsburgh and Bobby Slatter opened their first location in a former speakeasy on US-50 /Wooster Pike outside Mariemont. Fifty West later added a location in Chillicothe.

The brewery and taproom, which currently operates in Columbia Township, is opening a new restaurant and beer garden at the District at Deerfield, the mixed-use development in Deerfield Township, in spring 2024.

Similar to the brand's Burger Barn location on U.S. Route 50, the new space will offer indoor and outdoor seating and serve burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and beer. Customers will also be able to play sand volleyball and pickleball on outdoor courts.
