Sipos' Bakery, a landmark in Perth Amboy, is closing after more than 50 years

Sipos' Bakery on Smith Street in Perth Amboy, which has been in business more than 50 years, is closing next month.

The last day of business will be June 4, according to a post on the bakery's Facebook page.

"Many of you have heard by now, and unfortunately the rumor is true. We are very sad to announce that Sipos’ Bakery will be closing its doors for the last time on June 4, 2023," the Thursday post said.

"We are very thankful to all of our loyal customers for the continuous patronage and support over the decades. We have built wonderful relationships with all of you, both near and far, and we are sad to say goodbye. Whether you were a daily customer, travelled from out of town during the holiday seasons to get traditional Hungarian baked goods, or ordered from our website to be shipped across the country, we appreciate you," the post states.

The post also thanked family and friends who have supported the bakery as well as staff members who have worked there over the years for their "tireless efforts" especially during the past few weeks.

The post also expressed appreciation to the Perth Amboy community and beyond.

According to the bakery’s website, it opened more than 50 years ago serving the Hungarian, Polish and other European population of Perth Amboy.

The original owner, George Sipos, sold his bakery to two lifelong bakers who were eager to continue serving the traditional baked goods that generated long lines of customers during the holiday season.

The bakery. located across Smith Street from Dr. Herbert N. Richardson Elementary School and Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, is known for its Hungarian Beigli rolled with poppy seed or walnut, Babka baked with raisins and cheese, Hungarian Kifli, and even Bobalky.

In recent years the bakery has extended its line of Danish and pastries to meet the demand of the Hispanic population in Perth Amboy and has recently become known for Quesitos (Cheese Sticks), Pan Tortuga (Turtle Bread), Mexican Conchas, and Tres Leche cake slices.
