Find out which six Des Moines elementary schools have a new principal

Three Des Moines Public Schools' associate principals will start the next school year as elementary principals.

  • Current Edmunds Elementary School associate principal Ashley Inthalangsy will take over for outgoing Brubaker Elementary School principal Mark Adams.

  • Hillis Elementary School associate principal Benjamin LaConner will replace retiring Samuelson Elementary School principal Cindy Roerig.

  • Moore Elementary School associate principal Carrie Johnson will take over for outgoing Windsor Elementary principal Scott Nichol.

What to know about the new Brubaker Elementary principal

Inthalangsy has been with Des Moines schools since 2005 and has served as Edmunds' released dean of students, and an elementary teacher at Adams and Garton.

She has served throughout the district as a literacy leader, a literacy instructional coach, 21st century coordinator, TLC instructional coach and dean of students. She has a bachelor's degree in elementary teaching from Coe College and a Drake University master's degree in effective teaching and learning, and educational leadership.

Adams will move into the district's talent and personnel manager position.

What to know about the new Samuelson Elementary principal

LaConner has served as a special education consultant, summer school site coordinator and an instructional strategist while with Des Moines Public Schools.

Additionally, he was a second-grade teacher in Santa Barbara, Honduras; financial secretary and board member with the Apex Belltown Cooperative and a special education teacher for Seattle Public Schools; Denver Public Schools special education and interventionist; and trained teachers at the ADJ Bilingual School in Honduras.

He has a bachelor's degree in socio-cultural studies from Bethel University, master's degrees in elementary education and special education from City University of Seattle, and an educational administration master's degree from Northwestern College in Orange City.

What to know about the new Windsor Elementary principal

Johnson previously served as an associate principal and instructional strategist at Lewis Central Community Schools in Council Bluffs, a consultant for Heartland and Green Hill area education associations, and a classroom teacher at Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District.

Johnson graduated from Wartburg College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and later earned a master's degree in elementary reading and language arts from the University of Northern Iowa.

She is also a graduate of the Iowa Principal Leadership Academy at the Prairie Lakes Area Education Association.

Nichols has accepted a position as principal at Cattell Elementary.

Additionally, North High School Principal Ben Graeber will take over as Capitol View Elementary School's principal and Cattell Elementary School Principal Tiona Sandbulte will move to Stowe Elementary School.

The six administrators are expected to begin their new positions July 1, pending school board approval.
