Six DHS players make 11A West Region All-Conference team

Nov. 17—DICKINSON — The Dickinson Midgets' impact on the season was reflected in their state quarterfinal finish. Among the team shined eight players, who were named to the 11A West All-Conference team and honorable mention list. Their upperclassmen leadership was split among the rather large group, but seven stood out due to their equal abilities in their talents — as did one sophomore.

The six who made the all-conference team include Ben Carlson, Landon Fichter, Colin Tschetter, Max Wilkinson, Kaeden Krieg and Chase Selle.

"I thought by the end of the year we had a lot of guys playing very significant roles that they maybe weren't early on in the season," John Tuchscherer, DHS head coach, said. "A lot of credit to those kids for continuing to get themselves into rotation and getting themselves playing time and proving themselves once they got onto the field. Another big part of that is the leadership that those seniors brought onto our football team. They did everything that we asked them to do as coaches and they are definitely going to be missed."

Carlson, as wide receiver, was on the receiving end of 14 catches for a total of 313 yards — longest catch being for 56 yards. Carlson's single touchdown of the season came off of a 32 yard pass from quarterback Stephen Zawodny, against Valley City. Carlson was also on 14 kick returns for 284 yards. His longest return was for 60 yards.

Two of the Midgets offensive linemen, Fitcher and Wilkinson, made the squad. The pair helped Dickinson achieve a net total of 2008 offensive yardage in the season. As a team, Dickinson averaged 223 offense yards each game. Wilkinson was also named to the All-State First Team Offense.

"Not a lot of statistics to show off how great of a season who not only those two had, but all of our offensive and defensive lines had in general," Tuchscherer said. "A lot of the success that our others guys have all start with those guys up front and I know those skill position guys, our quarterback, all those guys would say the same exact thing."

The Midgets' coverage showed great IQ over the season with eight interceptions for 216 yards, averaging 27 yards per pick. Tuchscherer credited the senior leadership provided by Carlson and Selle in their secondary.

"Chase coming back as a safety for us this year was kind of our guy that got us into what we wanted to get into defensively. Checking into a certain coverage of a formation of what the other team lined up into, he was the guy that got us into those coverages," Tuchscherer said. "Ben, another senior in the defensive backfield... We played a lot of mix coverages and we would play multiple receiver side, zone and he is usually the guy there on the backside that we put on an island by himself and he does a good job of playing a lot of man coverage."

Tight end / linebacker Krieg caught an interception against the Class AA Williston team for an 81 yards defensive touchdown. On the offensive side he had five receptions for 137 yards.

Tschetter contributed on all three sides of the ball, but showed his greatest strength as the PAT kicker. He completed 11 PATs out of 12 and also kicked in a 25 yard field goal. On the defense he would score from a 67-yard interception return against Turtle Mountain Community High School.

Selle, one of Dickinson's finest, was nominated for the Senior Athlete of the Year award and was named to the All-State First Team Defense. He had a total of 97 offensive yards, three touchdowns and was 2-for-2 in PAT rushes. He showed that his feet were as good as his hands, rushing in a 21 yard touchdown and catching two touchdown passes from 10 and 40 yards out. As a cornerback he picked two interceptions, the longest being a 31 yard interception return.

The Midgets also had two honorable mentions of senior Drew Biel, who had one rushing TD and sophomore Isaac Schulte, with an interception for 15 yards.
