Six Flags Great Adventure to hire hundreds for annual 'Fright Fest'

You want scary? Try searching for hundreds of workers in the middle of a labor shortage to staff your elaborate haunted house.

That's the task for Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson.

The amusement park will host a series of hiring events beginning Saturday to find more than 200 actors, makeup artists, technicians and costume workers for its annual Fright Fest. Pay for the positions ranges from $13 to $18 an hour.

Billed as the Northeast's Largest Halloween party, Fright Fest is scheduled to begin Sept. 16 and run on select days through Oct. 31.

First up: The company will have auditions for scare actors and ghouls July 30 at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and again on July 31 at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

It will have hiring events for all positions Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and Aug. 12 and Aug. 13, also at 5:30 p.m.

The company is ramping up its hiring as it faces a tight labor force. New Jersey's unemployment rate was 3.9% in June compared with 7.1% the same time last year.

It is searching for:

  • Scare actors and ghouls do deliver scares. Candidates must be at least 16 years old.

  • Makeup artists. Candidates must be at least 18.

  • Greeters and ambassadors. Candidates must be at least 16.

  • Technicians to assist with lighting, sound and special effects. Candidates must be at least 18.

  • Costume helpers to coordinate and organize actors' costumes. Candidates must be at least 18.
