Six girls killed in car crash on Tennessee highway
Six girls were killed in a violent car crash on a Tennessee interstate early Sunday morning.
Two adults were wounded in the wreck on I-24 in Robertson County, north of Nashville, local ABC affiliate WKRN reported. A third adult walked away unharmed. None of the victims were immediately identified.
Emergency responders said two cars collided just after 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-24, according to WKRN.
One car carried eight people, including the six children, local NBC affiliate WSMV reported. The second vehicle was a pickup truck driven by one man.
When the vehicles crashed, all six girls were reportedly ejected from their car. An adult woman riding in the passenger seat was also thrown from the vehicle. The man driving the car remained inside.
Both adults were hospitalized early Sunday morning. The woman was in critical condition and the man was in stable condition, WKRN reported. The six girls who died ranged in age from just 1 to 17.
The man driving the pickup truck was not seriously injured, according to WKRN.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
The tragedy came one week after a similar incident near New York City. Early in the morning of March 19 on the Hutchinson Parkway in Westchester County, five children were killed in a one-car crash with an unlicensed 16-year-old driver behind the wheel.
