Six local agencies to receive COVID grant money for pandemic-era expenses from the state

LANCASTER − Six local non-profit agencies will share an Ohio Department of Development grant of $306,000 for COVID-related expenses.

Here are the organizations and the amount they will get:

  • Connexion West $55,000

  • Fairfield Community Health Center $48,800

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters $66,400

  • Harcum House $19,500

  • Meals on Wheels of Fairfield County $96,300

  • The Lighthouse $20,000

Additionally, the city community development department will receive an administrative fee of $30,600 to manage the grant.

The agencies will use the money for operational expenses. Additionally, Meals of Wheels will also use part of the money for a new delivery van. The community health center will use its grants for communication technology to disperse COVID-19 information.

"But everyone else it's really for staff," community development director Lynda Berge Disser said. "Basically, to meet the increased needs that they saw during the pandemic to reimburse them for their costs. They didn't stop working. They were on the front lines."

Seven organizations applied for the money. But The Refuge, a substance abuse treatment center, was denied because it is in Pleasantville and not in the city limits.

The grant is called the Target of Opportunity Program and is funded through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

“Specifically, organizations needed to meet the national objectives of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program like serving low-income populations like neglected and abused children, senior citizens, and people experiencing homelessness," Berge Disser said.
